FM on iPod
From InsideRadio.com -
Apple adds FM to iPod nano.
For the first time since its launch of the iPod eight years ago, Apple will include a built-in FM tuner in one of its models. The iPod nano will feature an FM radio with live pause and iTunes Tagging announced CEO Steve Jobs today in a surprise appearance at Apples’ annual showcase of new devices.
………………..
I wouldn’t normally post something like this but one thing in particular popped out for me…”live pause and iTunes tagging”. With those phrases FM radio could be revolutionized in both good and bad ways. The ability to pause your FM radio is neat but ask anyone in TV and they will tell you that it just adds another factor into gathering ratings and determining ad rates. Imagine if you really liked the Greg Show on News Talk 107.9 but you don’t get off work till 5pm. In theory with this you could start recording the program at 4pm. You could then start listening at 5pm skipping the commercials and catch up during your commute home. You have devalued the spots in essence.
Itunes tagging is great for the listener. Your listening to your favorite station, hear a great song, you look at your iPod and it tells you the name of the song along with a buy now button. My question is how can the radio station benefit from this? Will they get a kick back off the iTunes sales that are generated from their station? Could sell ability of songs on iTunes cause one station to choose one format over another?
Like I said before…I’m not the expert on this and maybe I am way off base but when you get a big player like Apple jumping into the FM pie, some things might get stirred up.
