104.9 The Gump
Thanks to several anonymous tips we learned today that Montgomery is truly getting a New Rock station courtesy of Bluewater Broadcasting.. THIS IS CONFIRMED and your gonna like this, it’s going to be called 104.9 The Gump. I am 100% confident that this is the only station in the USA that is called “The Gump”…it is uniquely Montgomery. The big day is coming up soon, this Friday, July 30 so make sure you are tuned in around 5pm to hear the flip.
The new web site is still under construction but is already online – 1049thegump.com. The station will be streamed soon on both the station web site and the community portal www.buzzmontgomery.com.
The jock situation is wide open and I am sure we will hear more soon about this.
Personal opinion…this could seriously cause a few ripples in Montgomery. Whenever one flips, everyone else has to react. The Stroh stations I would think are the most likely ones to flip…we will see what happens.
Now that Montgomery has a rock station…what is that you want to hear on the station? Any opinions?

the website is http://1049thegump.com
i am curious and excited about this new station, it’s well needed in montgomery.
i wonder how 95.1 the fox will react?
FINALLY! We need this. I love 95.1, but they play the same old classic rock over and over. When I go out of town, it is so refreshing to hear the alternative and rock stations other cities have.
Yeah, I put the site in the article. Facebook and Twitter are already up too.
So much for Tiger thinking they were going to get any Montgomery ratings! It’s about time! THE GUMP…love it.
THE GUMP! F-ing priceless. I’m a fan already. See y’all at 5pm on Friday.
Alternative on the AM Dial? (1170) I sure hope nobody over the age of 60 will be chiming in to hear CBS news followed by The Temptations at 5pm Friday.
If I were a Dr./Clinic/Hospital/Ambulance I’d start buying advertising now
GUMP!
To the last poster, very funny indeed.
AM may have it’s listeners but it’s far and few between. I hope 1170 AM will do well with Alternative if they plan on doing it.
I’ve seen many things happen in my lifetime. This switch would seem very strange to me, if it were to happen. Although I’ll be rooting for the new format, I just don’t see it doing too well on an AM frequency.
Dan Presley
P.S. I listen to AM some but not very often. Most of my listening comes from the FM side and my CD collection though.
P.S. Dan… it’s on 1170am and 104.9FM.
Dan,
It’s a simulcast. Also on 104.9fm
So is this station also for the 1% of listeners who want an alternative rock station? Nice contrast in the way you completely suck up to Bluewater in this blog post but take pot shots at the Tiger in the blog post you wrote about them.
Thanks for the response to my post for the the info too. I appreciate it very much.
Hope The Gump 104.9 FM/1170 AM will have success and do very well.
I’m also rooting for The Tiger at 93.9 FM/107.1 FM to do well too, although they may have a slightly weaker signal.
Rock on boys! Montgomery needed both of your stations. (Gump and Tiger)
Your right. I was much kinder to them then I was The Tiger. I still don’t think we are talking about a large audience but with a frequency like 104.9 getting a 1 share is great. It’s a local station with a local staff…I’ll always root for that over a rim shot.
The translator (104.9) was the translator Tiger used when it actually showed some ratings in Montgomery. Should be sufficient for The Gump – and certainly better than a 12.5kw class C3 at 400ft coming from near tuskeegee. Wishing it was so does not make a signal go any further – laws of physics! Besides Tiger is always going to have to cater to Auburn. Unrated small market with small market thinking and rates. The Gump will be in a different league – with local staff and sellers.
One small difference…104.9 is a AM repeater now, not a translator. I believe the wattage was less when it was a translator. Also a repeater is allowed to use a STL (studio transmitter link) which translators are not allowed to do (they have to be able to pick up the station over the air.) That’s my understanding of the rules but I think there are exceptions or they aren’t enforced for translators…for example WAY-FM here in Montgomery at 91.5 and 91.9. There is no way that the signal from WAY in Nashville is picked up in Montgomery and I know for a fact they insert local promos at the transmitter. Maybe someone else could explain this better.
Brian,
Here is the official description of 104.9 – which is a translator.
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/translator.html#TRANS
104.9 is 250 watts.
I forgot to add, in October ’09 the FCC removed the “cross-service” restrictions, thus allowing AM’s to be “translated” on FM at 250 watts.

With all that power, they shouldn’t have any trouble gaining traction in the Gump.
If the conditions are just right, I may can get this station here in Selma Alabama too.
1170 AM is a different story altogether. I can get them with a slightly moderate signal, on most days.
At times, I’ve been able to get 104.9, 107.1 and the old 93.9 translator too. This occurred not too long ago, while I was doing some yard work for a relative, right off Highway 80 East, near Tyler.
Amazing isn’t it!
WTGZ/former WQSI is 25,000 watts. I don’t know what old information you have. Every other liner on the old WQSI was about them having 25,000 watts to the point that I wanted to call Sports Call and tell them, ok we get it.
93.9 is locally owned WTGZ The Tiger out of Auburn/Union Springs.
It isn’t owned by Cumulus, Clear Channel Qantum. It is a locally owned station on Auburn.
It is 25,000 Watts. It comes in loud and clear in the Montgomery area. Repeater or not, 93.9 has a stronger signal than 104.9 and 1170.
WTGZ 93.9 is locally owned and operated out of Auburn.
It’s 25,000 watts and it comes in loud and clear in Montgomery. I was in Montgomery the other day and listened while I was driving all over You admitted to being “kinder” to them than the Tiger, but honestly, I’d like a reason why.
WTGZ isn’t 25,000 watts according to it’s license, it’s 12,500. I don’t see a CP either for an upgrade. (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?list=0&facid=9782)
Let’s do some quick math.
ERP is 12.5kW
5 bay DCR-H5 w/ 4.31 dBi gain
Antenna is 469 feet AGL
485 feet of cable length has .4/.5 dBk of loss
TPO approx 4,000 watts
Transmitter is located 36.9 miles (as the crow flies) from Ann St.
Tower is 236 meters above sea level, and Ann St is 306. Thus Tiger is also shooting “uphill”
That puts your service conture right around 40-50 dBu.
Face it Tiger guys, you’re rim shot.
Greg,
WQSI upgraded to 25,000 watts when they moved from 94.1 to 93.9. I think that was in 2006.

At 12:51 PM JULY 30 2010 – 104.9 THE GUMP SIGNS ON
13 minutes ago via web
I know. I tuned in around 12:15 and it was silent. I went in and ate lunch at Chappy’s, came back out and boom it was on the air. I guess they changed their mind as to what time to sign on.
I was being impatient and
Couldn’t figure out why I should wait!
Hey Rick,
Must be nice to be the owner!
This station rocks. Go Gump Go!
Brian,
It’s nice not to be part of some big
Corporation where we’d have to have meetings, and discussions, and consultants, and VP’s all weighing in on the merits – oh, and let’s see those revenue projections. Instead, we get an idea on Monday, decide to do it on Tuesday, and with a handful of truly dedicated people have the Gump on in 2 1/2 days. BTW, thanks to Greg Rickaby who actually suggested the name. We all just looked at each other and said – damn! Thanks Greg, who is also the voice of the Gump! Thinking of doing public auditions for the airstaff and let the listeners decide..
I have been waiting for this since losing the ability to listen to The Tiger on the road years ago.
The Tiger just recently became available again and of course I was tuning in right away.
While channel surfing during commercial I stopped on one of The Tiger’s old providers (104.9) and noticed it was playing something that normally would not air (I think it had been turned into a gospel station previously) before. This obviously excited me greatly and I continued listening until I heard Mr. Radio Voice announce that I was listening to The Gump.
I no longer need another station. Long live The Gump.
I was able to get 104.9 FM, just outside of Selma, a few minutes ago. This station is very powerful for a translator. Rock on Gump! Your station sounded just like a local one, while I was listening. It came in very well.
Amazing isn’t it.
ALL RIGHT!! No longer do we have to listen to the garbage that 95.1 spews out all day. We joke at work about how they play AC/DC every 15 minutes and may actually have a AC/DC button!!
Hey Rick Hendrick, want to know what good rock music is??? Listen to 104.9!!!
Thank you 104.9! Piss off 95.1!!!
how come it does not come through on my radio ?
Where do you live?
If you live in Montgomery, you should be able to get 104.9 FM with no issues at all.
I live well outside the coverage area of 104.9 FM and won’t be able to get them period.
The only way I can listen, is through my Computer.
Unless I’m in the mood for Mr. Rush Limbaugh, I don’t listen to the AM band any longer.
heard the station for the first time today. keep the heavy stuff comin, lose the rollercoaster of love, and the wake me up when september ends bull…we can get all that on the other stations. lets hear some metallica, pantera, dio, well i could go on and on, so … lets hear some metal!!
i have been listening to The Gump for about 3 weeks now. I am so happy that we have alternative rock. I like the mix of older and new rock keep it coming
thank god! I just found out about the station I have a reason to listen to the radio again! Montgomerys stations are horrible there’s only so much classic rock I can stand. Keep rockin out! Ooo can we hear some sevendust?
I didn’t even own a radio until I found out about the gump. Thanks, Gump!
Thanks for bringing THE GUMP to Montgomery, Al. best music i’ve heard in awhile……Keep on Rock’n. Need more power……
finally, finally, finally THIS ROCKS
Great station. Too much Beastie Boys!
When is The Gump 104.9 going to link up on the iheart radio app?
The Iheart Radio app is owned by clear channel, don’t hold your breathe on them adding the gump unless they by out bluewater.
@Steve
No such thing as too much Beastie Bouys.
Wow! I like the new station. I’m also #2 on the Reverbnation Rock/Alternative charts …my music is so diverse.. hopefully my music will have a chance to get played here… check me out “VENOM” & “LOVELESS” by SEN ROYALTY http://www.reverbnation.com/senroyalty Thanks guys you rock!
Agreed: Too much Beastie Boys
Also, too much Red Hot Chili Peppers
