Morris and Montiel Are No More

From News Talk 107.9‘s Morris & Montiel Facebook Fan Page:
Dan Morris – Let me confirm to all that Morris and Montiel as you know it ended on Wednesday. I will always love this audience. At an appropriate time and forum I will provide you the whole truth as always.
Mark Montiel – Pray for my old radio partner Dan Morris. He has been put in a difficult position by Bluewater. One person doing the show every day was not our agreement. Thanks again for the prayers. Mark.
This is all we know for now. Soon as more comes out…it will be on here.

Break up the team. WTG, Budell! >-(
Lots of interesting info on this over on doc’s political parlor. But did they really fire him over having a drink in the studio. What dumb ass came up with that rule?
Cussing out your boss isn’t exactly a good career move.
Bring back Don Markwell and Joe Marcus!
Shut the place down!
I don’t think anybody wanted to be the guy to replace Markwell. It can’t be done. Who do they have to offer? They preempt Laura Ingraham for the worst local show in the history of Montgomery. (Calling it Viewpoint is a disgrace to the legacy.) And Greg Budell is a joke. Not just a joke, but the kind you unravel bazooka gum to find his Miami botox face making dick jokes. He panders to the very lowest that the human race has to offer. He might win a poll on a blog that 10 people read, but he’s still only just one finger shy of being plankton. I apologize to any plankton I may have offended by comparing them to Greg Budell.
marcus % markwell??????? might as well try to bring back the bear. as far as marcus….he’s good to go solo or even with morris. might be a good mix. less politics with marcus. but a pol know-it-all to allow the show to go political when need be.
Ego clash between Monteil and Management. I don’t think Dan can hold out doing a three hour show by himself, and holding another full time position in the Business World.
Its Bluewater’s Loss.
Hey Tyler, did it ever occur to you that you were posting on “a blog 10 people read”? Idiot.
I’m pretty confident that there are at least 11 now that Tyler is around.
Correction Brian: My wife occassionally reads our site so that makes 12. She just never posts anything. Maybe our wives should so we have two regular posters . . . because we don’t have any right now. ; )
Dont believe anything you hear and half of what you see…… There are two sides to every story….. and for Morris and Montiel….. You can not make anyone believe what you believe to make it so….. You have your opinion and others have thiers…. Just because you have guest you think will win and give them all the publicity why not give the other person a chance to come on the show….. I quit listening to you guys after about a month we want to hear whats going on in Montgomery…… Not your policical views of who you want to win in a race… You do not give the other people a chance to even voice thier opinion… That to me is control.. saying the same thing over and over and over again makes for bad radio…….. I started listening to Roberta for that last hour after another talk show host gets off the air at least he gives everyone a chance to talk and does not voice who he thinks over and over again about who he thinks aut to win from the gov to the attorney general and down to Dist 6 race…and so on…… we have only heard one or two come on just before the race and thats not right….. i hope theres a law that states that some where…….. ok now I am tried frusted and dont give a darn about who gets on with Morris it will be the same ol same ol crap of Control……. so sad……..
Mark Montiel was a bully with a microphone. The airwaves are better off without him on them. Hopefully Dan Morris will be more moderate in his approach. Markwell was a Nazi/racist who also allowed no other “viewpoint” but his. A little open dialog and interest in airing all sides of the discussion will be good for the market. Bluewater did the market a favor.
I hate to say it, Anon, but Morris isn’t any better of a host than Montiel. Neither had the skill or the temperment for the job.
It is my hope that BWB realizes that and is in the process of either replacing Morris as well or sponsoring new local talk radio shows to provide us with what we’re not getting now… quality local talk radio.
I know for a fact that BW would sell WACV for $200k to anyone who thinks they can do Talk better. The station is actively for sale. Pick up an FM translator and give it a go….or shut up!
i dunno where you got your facts, but the talk radio station is not WACV anymore, it’s WMRK and currently owned by Scott Alexander of Alexander Broadcasting in selma with an LMA to Bluewater to run Talk radio.
WACV is now 104.9 The Gump, Selling WACV right now would be a bad move on Bluewater’s part, but i can safely say that i don’t think they would sell their hottest station right now.
WACV is for sale. $200k. The Gump translator can move to WQKS HD2 with better coverage and be totally legal. Anyone want to step up?
Anon. is correct. WACV is for sale. 5kw daytime 7 watts night out of a two tower array (down from 6). Engineering is already done but not filed. Comes with 35 acres of land. And yes, the Gump will move to WQKS HD2 and remain on the translator at 104.9. HD3 is also available for another format or lease. How do I know, Jack? Cause I’m the one you need to call if you want to buy it. I know of another translator you could lease too. Any takers? How about you, Montiel? Wanna put your money where your mouth is?
Rick,
First off Congrats on the success of the Gump.
Second, let me apologize for assuming that WACV was not for sale, my sources must not have been up to date since you placed the station up for sale.
Jack,
No appology necessary. Not openly advertising that we would part with ACV, but if someone (hint, hint) wanted to try their hand at broadcasting – 200k takes it.
Thank you, Rick Peters! You managed to not only rid the airwaves of the leader of Montgomery’s right-wing version of Air America, but also vindicated several people that suffered his bombastic and pompous little rants on the air. He hurt many of my friends just because he could and because he’s a sociopath. I’m not ashamed to say I hated him. He treats people that don’t agree with him like something nasty on the bottom of his shoe.
And considering the state of his finances, I wouldn’t worry too much about him putting his money anywhere. Chasing ambulances in Montgomery isn’t exactly a lucrative business venture. There’s a lot of competition.
Kudos on the Gump. It’s all I listen to now.
Morris and Montiel were a good team, although they often were one-sided in their “viewpoint”. Markwell could get away with it, since he was the longest-running talk show host in the state as far as anyone knows. Marcus has been out of the game a while, but would be great with Morris.
There must have been some behind-the-scenes changes because Budell now has Susan Woody as a co-host and producer in the afternoons. Where did Bob Jackson go? Is he still doing news? The end result is that Greg somehow transitioned back to his old show style with less politics, and it suits him.
Budell may be going back to his old show format before all the politics, but his best days was with his original producer long before bob jackson, he used to make an entertaining show just tormenting the poor guy over small mistakes.
if that’s true about greg…..good. he’s so much better without the political crapola. and yes, picking on jason was fun. marcus & morris???? what about greg with marcus as producer?
@Frisbee
someone needs to petition Bluewater to bring Jason back and get the greg show back to it’s real roots!
Sorry boys, but Jason burned a major bridge after he left BW, and will NEVER be coming back to BW as long as I’m there. Period. Paragraph. Over and out. We are VERY loyal to our core group, but once you’re out, you’re Fredo Corleone.
Sorry rick, but there are thousands of people in the listening area that will say that Jason Made greg budell the person he is today. there was chemistry between jason and greg that you tried and failed to attain through bob jackson.
with susan woody you just have greg acting like a horny, perverted old man all day.
I think “Fredo” Davenport now works at Cumulus anyway, last time I heard.
Greg and Susan sound awesome together and IMHO it’s the best version yet of Greg’s talk show ..
Mr. Peters, how about a weekend show that recaps everything from the week prior? Sort of like a cleanup show on Saturday mornings. I even have a name for it…KP Duty.
Good suggestion Kevin. Just a coincidence that KP happens to be your initials?
montgomerytvandradio.com would love to have a weekend hour or two to talk about local TV and Radio. We’d keep it politics free and give live advice for locals. We’d be your biggest hit Rick. OK, not bigger than Glenn Beck or Laura Ingraham but somewhere in the top 10 . . . or 50.
Saturday Mornings are a great time for cleanup duty, Kevin!!
It sure was a surprise to me when I worked at WACV how many people listened on Saturdays as they ran errands or participated in community events. And to this day, I still get cards, emails, and gifts from people who listened back then and remember some of the discussions we had.
Rick Peters drew out a pie chart of what should be covered each hour: yard sales, football scores, police blotter, etc. I probably spent too much time just reading the paper aloud in the early shows (and on more than one occasion, RP asked me if I was really trying to zero in on the nursing home audience). Later on, I did stand-alone interviews with people or themed shows most of the time, but still had that utility material at the top of each hour. There was certainly a place for a homegrown show on the weekends.
You would do a great job with “KP Duty” — hope you get the chance someday! You could even ask – ‘hey, where are all the women at?’
good way to get marcus back….he and the other radio geezers always make for a good show on sat…. or used to.
This is what happens when people fly in on their private planes from Florida and try to be Montgomerians. They end up putting diesel in their SUVs and realize that no matter how much money they make from selling spots to 4th rate used car dealerships, they’ll never be one of us. I might die with less money than Prick Eaters, but I’ll have lived a more useful life.
Markwell was good when he had a producer that wasn’t on the same side as him. maybe get a host that has one opinion and a producer with another. its been done before. and it was really worth listening to.
Actually Tyler, I’m an Elmoron. Let’s get it straight. And, since we have no idea who you are, you are free to take cowardly pot shots from under your bed. Congrats! Someone who is actually adding to the discourse – not.
Amen. I would walk up and down the streets of downtown Montgomery, all morning to hear Markwwell with a portable radio in my pocket, just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I wouldn’t take a winning Georgia lottery ticket, to listen to the tripe they call “Viewpoint” nowadays.
Rick, the fact that you want to live in Elmore County but are afraid to live in Montgomery (while making money off it) says a lot more about you than it does about me. Call me when your ancestors settled Elmore County. Otherwise, get on your private plane back to Florida, call Costa Rica, get some money from your phantom investors, and leave this place. We were a lot better off before you came here.
Tyler, you must not be in the broadcasting industry or you would realize that Millbrook and Prattville ARE the Montgomery metro market. BTW, if you are representative of what a “native” is, then I’m glad I’m not from here. Big guy hiding behind his phony identity. Enough of you.
Disagree with Tyler’s attacks .. the Montgomery market has improved since Rick Peters came here. At least there is some excitement in radio. What was it like before?
Everyone trying to be the next WHHY/Y102? Everyone trying to be Mix 103?
Stations managed from anywhere other than Alabama? Playlists dictated by national trends?
At least the guy lives here in the River Region. What other radio owners live in the area? The people that own WMGY-AM?
It is a different time and a new day. Radio’s gotta change to stay alive. As a listener I like what he has brought to Montgomery with the Bluewater stations. The Gump and News/Talk on FM have been exciting starts but I love the Q the most.
Thanks for the kind words LL. We are trying. I guess we/I am an easy target. Comes with the licenses I guess. This Tyler is someone who either was fired from BW, or someone we wouldn’t hire. Just enough inside information (plane, Costa Rica, etc) to give it away, but not close enough to us to be accurate or intelligent.
Bluewater is nothing!! Even Clear channel is better.
You have got to be kidding. Three hip-hop stations is better?!?
Tyler, so what if Rick lives in Elmore County. His business and his business tax revenue are in Montgomery city and county. His business probably contributes more to Montgomery County then anywhere else. In this economy do you want him to take that elsewhere? I don’t.
hey tyler,
you’re just jealous cause The Gump made Tiger a total non-starter in Montgomery. Get over it. Go back to your little unrated market and leave the big boys alone.
When I’m able to listen, The Gump still rocks. This station is the most exciting one to come along, in quite sometime. Although my musical tastes may not be with Mainstream Alternative, I like the way this station is presenting itself. They’re doing a great job with their delivery.
To all of those involved with The Gump, rock on boys. Glad that your station is doing very well.
When I do hear a Switchfoot and/or Flyleaf song, on here, I try to sing along and have myself a good time. Those two groups are awesome and I love what they do.
Dan,
I heard a rumor that Switchfoot is coming to town soon. I used to work at thier Nashville record label in the late 90′s before they went main stream. The wife and I might have to see them. Great band.
Wish I could come, if the rumor is true. Can’t drive on my own and have no to bring me. Most of the people I hang out with, are not into that style of music though. It would rock too hard for them anyway.
Thanks for sharing the info with me though.
That’s what I like about The Gump. They’re doing something no one else has the balls to do. My reason for wanting to a radio station, is to be a voice for the voiceless. Something like The Gump but instead of having a mainstream appeal, I wanted to do a Christian alternative of that. Since I’ve learned that my idea(s) would never do well, in my area, it would be better for me to keep on adding to my music collection and save up some more money, so that I can take my idea(s) and start up my own Internet station.
And yes I saw Switchfoot back in the late 90s, in Atlanta. They were awesome at that time. This is when they were working for Re:Think Records. Love what they did then and still love what they do now. This band is one of the best out there. I consider them one of my all time favorites.
I know that Christian Rock/Alternative has a hole here and I wanted to fill it in but since my market is very small and would catch mostly flack from our local troublemakers, it would be better for me to do this on the Internet. This way I won’t have to worry about protecting someone else’s radio station(s), reduce and increase the power, at various times and/or worry about spending loads of money to keep the facility in tip top shape and in law with the FCC. Besides I wouldn’t have to worry about some suit and tie telling me my music is too hard and/or too soft. I could have the playlist I want and not have to go through a long process to get this thing going.
Once again, thanks for sharing that rumor with me. If I was to attend and it did happen, I’d be there in a heartbeat and have myself a good time.
Ah, the Re:Think Records time. If I remember correctly, that was under the EMI Chirstian Music Group at least for publishing and distribution when I worked there. I also interned at Forefront Records when it was out in Franklin. I’m a grad of Belmont University’s Music Business program. It’s fun to hear about allot of the artists and know I went to school with them. I don’t know anyone personally in Switchfoot though. One of the newer members, Jerome, used to be in my favorite band (Mortal /aka Fold Zandura) I went to so many shows and helped with setup that he would probably remember me.
