Y102 Afternoons
New Y102 PD Carey Edwards has hit the ground running. Not only has he kicked off a new morning show he has launched the search for a new afternoon talent. Read the job description here.
I was able to listen to his new morning show as I traveled this morning for about 15 minutes. During that time period it was very music intensive but when Carey did talk it was very upbeat and news centric. He talked very briefly about several entertainment related topics and was quickly back to the music.
My opinion is Y102 has got to start promoting the station. Now, it might be better to wait until the afternoon jock is in place but it has to happen soon. They have to let people know that the slate has been wiped clean and they are going after that 18-34 audience with the top music of today. More music, and talk only when you have something to say. This age group wants to know what the stars and musicians are doing…they have twitter and facebook and it’s easy to find out on the web via their phones and computer so Y102 has to do it faster, better and be consistent at it. Not only that but they have to be out in the city being seen. Be at the night spots, the movies, the concerts…something that hasn’t been done in the past few months.
The verdict is definitely still out, but establishing a morning show with Carey is step 1 and getting a good afternoon jock will be step 2. Promotion and lots of it have to be step 3. I’ll keep tuning in myself to see how it’s going…hopefully the Y102 post Rick and Bubba and Steve Smith will thrive.
