July 27th, 2011 • Related • Filed Under
Today, DirecTV launched four premium HD channels and a 24-hour 3D version of ESPN. The channels and number assignments are:
106 ESPN3D
505 HB2wHD
520 5MAXHD
521 WMAXHD
523 @MAXHD
We expect DirecTV to add more HD over the coming months.
Thanks to the guys at satelliteguys for the scoop.

*yawn* So, DirectTV decides to upgrade 4 subscriber channels to HD. Then decides to go 24 hours on 3D. So if you don’t pay even more money (for the extra subscription fee for the premium channels) and if you don’t have a 3D tv, there is nothing new. While it is good for those of us interested in 3D, the rest of the news is nothing. When will DirectTV bother to upgrade channels broadcasting in HD (like BBC America, G4, etc.) in HD instead of keeping them in SD?
Some other sites such as satelliteguys.us and dbstalk.com are saying that the national HD channels are coming to DirecTV soon. That’s been a rumor for a while though. It seems like all of the cable and satellite providers have really slowed down adding HD lately.
So, when will WCOV reach agreement with DirecTV or grant me a waiver to receive another affiliate? I am mad at WCOV and shall always have a bad tastebin mynmouth for the way they handled my request for a waiver. I am not able to get FOX Network programming because David Woods wants a few cents more for each DirecTV subscriber. It would appear to me that he would benefit more if he could tell potential advertisers that he has the entire market covered. Guess he is happy to deprive DirecTV subscribers of our ability to receive FOX programming. WSFA, WAKA and WNCF have much more to offer DirecTV and they have an agreement. What a shame.
john, they gave me a waiver. ch 398 has a different ball game on sat. they had the rays while 20 had cubs
I’m with you on the WCOV absence on DirecTV. This foolishness has gone on far too long. I’ve heard rumors that Woods is unhappy with FOX for insisting on the higher carriage fees and is thinking of dropping the affiliation. I doubt that will happen, but still, FOX should compromise so that this market can see their local affiliate or let us have a national feed. Of course, those at the head of the FOX corporation aren’t especially noted for being the world’s greatest authority on compromise, so I guess we’re up the old chocolate creek minus the paddle. Aside from that fact, I’m actually pretty happy with my DirecTV service. No one comes close to their HD lineup. Sure, there is always room for improvement, but compared to Charter and Knology, they’re miles and miles ahead of the game.
What do we have to do to get a waiver from WCOV and Direct TV? I have complained to both but neither have been very helpful.
You said you complained to WCOV…have you actually asked for the waiver? WCOV is actually on the air though still not available through DirecTV. They don’t have to grant a waiver if you live inside their signal range.
I am a Direct TV customer and I did ask for a waiver and was refused.
I got fed up with missing NFC games thanks to no WCOV on DTV and their very poor OTA reception here in Dalraida. So I called DTV and explained it to the rep and got NFL Sunday ticket for 100 dollars off, 1/3rd off the normal price. So, now I’m never going to miss NFC games or my Saints. Plus since all Fox programming is on Hulu, I can wash my hands completely of WCOV.
I tried sending a letter to FOX broadcasting to see if they’d try and help resolve it, but the letter was apparently ignored and received no response.
